Infrastructure
Solving problems related to infrastructure constitutes a fundamental condition for improving a population's welfare, as it provides everyone with access to basic services such as electricity, communications, urban transportation and sanitation. At the same time, by expanding the infrastructure, you promote a reduction of costs, an increase in productivity, an improvement in the quality of productive structural goods and services, and the consolidation of regional integration.

The supply of services in the infrastructure sector must stay ahead of the demand, so as not to become a factor that could potentially disrupt a new growth cycle. Within this context, BNDES's actions in the infrastructure sector are aimed at:

the expansion and modernization of the electric sector;

the diversification of the national energy matrix;

the development of the natural gas market;

the promotion of renewable energies;

the increase in the supply of biofuels;

evaluating and working on the logistical bottlenecks surrounding cities and the access to ports, with the aim of improving the systems' efficiency; and

expanding the telecommunications systems and contributing to the development of cutting-edge nationally-produced technological products.

Electrical Energy

The electrical energy sector encompasses three segments: generation; transmission and distribution of electricity. BNDES has been playing a very important role in providing support for the expansion and modernization of the electrical sector, which has enabled the carrying out of projects that require long-term maturation and high investment volumes. The objective of the Bank's action is to ensure a high quality, safe and inexpensive supply of electric energy, attending to the needs of the economy and of society as a whole.

In the generation segment it is worth highlighting not only the support offered to the hydroelectric plants, but also the attempt to increment alternative energy sources - small hydroelectric centrals (PCHs).

Gas, Petroleum and Renewable Energy Sources

The main aim of BNDES's financing of the oil and natural gas sector is to promote the development of the entire productive chain - development and production, refining, transportation, distribution -, thereby maximizing the participation of the national industry of goods and services, in a competitive and sustainable basis.

The exploratory activity, given its elevated risk, is not object of the Bank's financing, and is in turn financed essentially by risk capital.

In the electrical generation segment, BNDES finances undertakings involving thermoelectric generation, gas co-generation, and generation from renewable sources (biomass and wind power).

Logistics

This area operates in the major transportation networks (highway, railway, port and air), besides providing support to the merchant navy, whose projects obtain their source of resource at the FMM - Merchant Navy Fund.

To improve the efficiency of the railway system and to reduce the impact of the railway upon the cities through which it circulates, BNDES differentiated its action with the aim of reducing logistical bottlenecks, especially regarding support towards the improvement of access to ports, in the outskirts of the cities, in the resettling of families that inhabit the domain lane and the elimination of level passages in urban environments.

Similarly, BNDES differentiated the financial support given to investments of the railways mode in the North and Northeast Regions of the Country.

Telecommunications

BNDES operates in the telecommunications sector by financing fixed, mobile and Subscription TV operators, under the following objectives: (i) to stimulate the demand for equipment and software supplied by the local industry, (ii) to promote the technological development in Brazil, and (iii) to support the universalization of telecommunication services.

The Bank supports investments towards the implementation and expansion of networks, with the aim of improving the quality of these services as well as introducing new technologies through direct, indirect and mixed financing. Investments involving construction work, facilities, information systems, services and equipment are also contemplated by the financing.
