» BNDES and the Ministry of Social
Development sign a cooperation agreement
BNDES and the Ministry of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger signed, this Wednesday, 12, in Brasília, a technical cooperation agreement which formalizes the partnership between the two institutions.
The document was signed at a ceremony in the auditorium of the General Military Quarters, with the presence of the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Minister of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger, Patrus Ananias, and the President of BNDES, Luciano Coutinho. The occasion was part of the events celebrating the fourth year of existence of the Ministry of Social Development [MDS].
With the agreement, the Ministry and BNDES officially establish their commitment to the implementing of social development strategies that support initiatives for inclusion and the creation of work and income opportunities.
The agreement confirms the ongoing partnership between the Bank and the Ministry in activities that benefit the least favored sectors of the society. The expectation is that it will intensify these activities.
One of the activities developed between the two institutions was the supporting line to recyclable waste collectors' cooperatives, launched in October 2007. The creation of this line was based on a joint proposal by the Ministry of Labor and Employment, Ministry of the Cities and Ministry of Social Development and Fight Against Hunger.
BNDES support to collectors' cooperatives is given under the Program of Solid Wastes of the federal government's Pluri-annual Program (PPA), which makes the collectors a target for the Brazilian State's public policy.
In the first stage of its support to recyclable waste collectors cooperatives, in 2007, BNDES approved 34 projects, for the total amount of BRL 22.9 million, involving eight Brazilian states (BA, GO, MG, PR, SC, SE and SP), as well as the Federal District. In January 2008 the bank carried out a second selection, and 42 new projects were received.
