» BNDES grants R$ 2.5 million in credit for six movie theaters in São João de Meriti

· The cinema complex, with a total of 1,736 seats will serve an area of seven million inhabitants in need of leisure activities and cinema entertainment, within a radius of 5 km

BNDES' Board of Directors approved a financing of R$ 2.5 million, under Programa de Apoio à Cadeia Produtiva do Audiovisual [Support Program to the Audiovisual Productive Chain] - Procult ambit, for the implementation of six movie theaters, inside the Shopping Grande Rio mall, located in the municipality of São João de Meriti/State of Rio de Janeiro. The resources represent 60.6% of the project, which is of R$ 4.1 million. 23 new direct job posts are expected to be created.

The project contemplates the construction of a multiplex building complex with a capacity for 1,736 people, in the expansion area of Shopping Grande Rio. The movie theaters will have stadium-style seating, with wall-to-wall screens, modern seats, digital surround sound and automated ticket sales.

The new theaters will cater to an area of influence with more than 1.7 million inhabitants in a five kilometer radius, within Baixada Fluminense, a public presently lacking leisure and entertainment options. The movie complex offers the same comfort found in the city's Southern District venues, which follow the multiplex model.

The Severiano Ribeiro Group already has six traditional movie theaters in this same shopping mall, with slope-type seats, small dimension screens and Dolby SR analogic sound, opened January 1996, with maximum capacity for 1,153 spectators. Once the new complex opens, the old one will close.

Opened on November 1995, Shopping Grande Rio is strategically located in the municipality of São João de Meriti, along highway Presidente Dutra and less than 500 meters from the last cloverleaf intersection of Linha Vermelha.

The shopping center has established itself as the most important consumer venue of Baixada Fluminense. In 2008, a new expansion will be opened. The purpose behind the expansion goes beyond the opening of new shopping space - it aims at consolidating the mall in the region.

The Severiano Ribeiro Group is at present the country's second largest film exhibition chain - the largest amongst domestically-controlled companies. Since 1997, the Group has maintained its domestic market share around 16%. This position has stabilized itself mostly through the opening of multiplex movie theaters.
