» BNDES finances R$ 48.5 million to an environmental project of Petroquímica União S/A

The Board of Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social [BNDES] approved a R$ 48.5-million financing to Petroquímica União S/A (PQU), a company located in Santo André and Mauá (State of São Paulo), for the modernization and expansion of its productive capacity.

BNDES's share is equivalent to 77% of the project's total amount, budgeted at R$ 62.9 million. In the construction phase, it is expected that 3 thousand direct and indirect jobs will be created - plus 30 direct jobs in the petrochemical center and 6.5 thousand jobs in the productive chain. The project contemplates the installation of an enclosed-type flare - a torch that emits light continuously and is part of PQU's pipe safety system - and representas the modernization of the unit's smoke-emission reduction system. The innovation will also result in the production of 220 cubic meters per hour of demineralized water. In addition, the project will refurbish existing boilers, in order to increase the capacity for generating and increasing steam temperature.

The project is furthermore directed towards social investments amounting to R$ 6.9 million, R$ 4.5 million of which have been financed by BNDES.

Expansion - The new flare will increase, without smoke emission, the gas-burning capacity, which will jump from 505 tons per hour to 605 tons per hour. The enclosed flare will function at a parallel with the (elevated) Stack Flare, which currently has a burning capacity of 700 tons per hour, of which, however, only 15% - that is, 105 tons per hour - do not originate smoke.

The demineralized water new unit will process the added water consumption and minimize the generation of residues.

Petroquímica União S/A is a part of Unipar Group and Brazil's first basic petrochemicals center. These products are used as raw materials by the second petrochemical generation, resulting in compounds such as polyethylene, polypropylene, styrene and cumene, which are in turn processed into input and consumer goods such as plastic, resins, fibers, detergents and paint by third-generation chemical industries.
