» BNDES and Furnas sign a BRL1 billion contract for the construction of the Simplício hydroelectric power plant

· BNDES has 105 PAC projects in the energy area, 65 of which have already been approved

The President of Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social (BNDES), Luciano Coutinho, and the President of Furnas Centrais Elétricas S.A, Luiz Paulo Conde, took part this Thursday, 27, in the ceremony over the signing of the BRL1.0 billion contract for the construction of the Simplício Hydroelectric Power Plant. The total investment is BRL1.6 billion, 62% being BNDES's participation.

This is an additional support by the Bank to the energy sector, under Programa de Aceleração do Crescimento [Growth Acceleration Program] (PAC). BNDES's portfolio currently has 105 projects in the energy area, totaling up to BRL36.9 billion in financings that will enable investments amounting to BRL62.8 billion. 65 of these projects have already been approved and amount to BRL16.5 billion in financings by the Bank.

Specifically as regards electric power generation projects, BNDES's portfolio totals BRL27.9 billion, corresponding to a 10.8 thousand MW generation capacity. 59 projects have been approved to date, for BRL 12 billion in Bank support.

The Simplício power plant will be the second largest hydroelectric power plant in the State of Rio de Janeiro (the largest is Usina Nilo Peçanha, in the city of Piraí), with a 333.7 MW generation capacity - enough energy to supply a city with a population of of 1.5 million. In 2010, when it starts to operate, Simplício will represent a 28% increase in the offered hydropower capacity in Rio de Janeiro, which currently relies on 10 hydroelectric power plants, with a 1.2 thousand MW generation capacity.

Simplício is located by the Paraíba do Sul River, bordering the municipalities of Sapucaia and Três Rios (RJ) and Chiador (MG). The investments in the power plant will create 4 thousand direct and 10 thousand indirect jobs, and also contemplates the construction of waste treatment stations and lakeside environmental preservation areas.

The Furnas hydroelectric power plant, a company of the Eletrobrás group, integrates the portfolio of 128 projects approved by the Bank, which should demand financings of BRL19.8 billion and total investments of BRL34.1 billion. The power plants will add 14.6 thousand MW to the sector's generating capacity, 11 thousand MW of which from hydropower.

On top of the above, BNDES sums BRL5.8 billion in financings to the transmission sector since 2003, corresponding to 9.6 thousand kilometers in extensions and 33 projects. The expected investment for the sector is BRL7.1 billion.

2007 was an outstanding year for the sector. The Bank approved 54 energy projects, amounting to BRL12.7 billion - 274% above the total BRL3.4 billion approved in 2006, corresponding to 32 projects. Out of this total, the funds for hydroelectric power plants totaled BRL7.2 billion, relative to 3 thousand MW and to BRL10.2 billion in total investments.
