» BNDES supports cinema festival in Canudos

Sponsored by BNDES, the Cine Fest Brasil - Canudos began on Wednesday, April 23, in Canudos, state of Bahia. The event, jointly organized by the company Circuito Infinito de Festivais (which also promotes Brazilian cinema festivals abroad) was held at Praça do Forró (The For All Square), a center for celebration meetings of the city.

Infinito's director, Adriana Dutra, and Canudo's mayor, Adailton dos Santos da Gama, opened the event. Both thanked BNDES for the supported given to the event. As the director stated, "the cities that underwent war, generally are given special attention by government authorities.

Canudos was forgotten, but considering the audience we have here today, the population is eager to get engaged in the Brazilian cultural map". The festival will begin on the 27th.

Lighted by a full moon and a starry sky, about 1,200 inhabitants worked their way into the square to see the open-air showcase of the short film "Boca-a-Boca", by Allan Ribeiro, and the feature film "Fica Comigo Esta Noite", by João Falcão. Children did not shifted their eyes from the big screen, and adults observed their amazement.

The Fest Brasil - Canudos intended to call Brazilian people's attention to the city that saw a war and since then has been set apart from projects and investments for the development of local economy. Right after the festival, the Bank will send to Canudos a team assigned to boost their economic skills, spurring businesses, employment and income for the population, who mostly make a living from low-paid jobs, informal economy and the retirement pension of the elderly.

The city, currently with a 14 thousand-population, with no special economic activity, except for the goat farming and banana crop raising, got closely engaged in this never-seen festival. Early in the morning, when the sound car invited people to enjoy the afternoon events, the city cheered up in excitement.

On every corner, would talk about the same thing: the festival's opening ceremony, starred by the accordion player Landinho Pé de Bode, who even plays the eight-basses accordion, which was the main attraction in almost all the parties in Canudos, but today is pretty rare, as Landim says, a 65-year-old suntanned countryman, "young people today do not care about it. their music style is another one". "Nobody cares about the old times music. I only play country music", he said.

The Praça do Forró (For All Square) got small to shelter the population who, wearing their best Sunday outfits, made a point of seeing the first movie exhibition in Canudos. Lacking theater screens, the city population had never been to a movie theater. Very few people had ventured to go to Euclides da Cunha's movie theater, a three-hour trip from Canudos. From 82 people interviewed to work in the festival production, only 15 had been to a movie theater. These were hired. The festival boosted local sales, and generated 15 direct and around 30 indirect job opportunities.
