BNDES approved financing for three sanitation projects. In
Minas Gerais, for Companhia de Saneamento de Minas Gerais –
Copasa) (R$ 578.2 million); in Rio Grande do Sul, for the
city of Caxias do Sul (R$ 104 million); and Espírito Santo,
for Companhia Espírito Santense de Saneamento - Cesan (R$
85.7 million). Altogether, the Bank’s support amounts to R$
768 million, investments will generate 3.3 thousand jobs and
will serve 4.8 million inhabitants.
The projects, covered by the Growth Acceleration Plan (PAC),
will generate 3.3 thousand direct and indirect jobs during
the works and will serve 4.8 million people.
From January 2007 to April 2008, BNDES approved eighteen R$
2.6 billion loans for sanitation projects, which enabled
total investment of R$ 3.8 billion. Additionally, the bank
is currently analyzing eight other projects accounting for
R$ 844 million investments and will require the Bank’s
support in the amount of R$ 644 million.
The Brazilian sanitation market is composed of 26 regional
utilities companies, eight microrregional companies, and 388
local companies amounting to 422 service providers. Water
and sewage supply is given to 5.4 thousand cities.
Copasa – The loan for Companhia de Saneamento de Minas
Gerais (Copasa), of R$ 578.2 million will be invested in the
expansion and optimization of water and sewage supply
systems in 34 cities of Minas Gerais state. Total
investments expected amount to R$ 681,6 million.
Copasa estimates that 2 thousand jobs will be generated
during the works. The company currently provides 11 thousand
jobs and will have 13 thousand at the end of the project.
Altogether, 41 projects will be ramped up. Out of these, 20
concern water supply and 21, sanitary sewage.
The project will improve the population’s quality of life
and health, reducing, thus, sanitary diseases. Investments
will also allow expanding water and sewage services in 34
cities of the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte and
immediate assistance to 4.3 million inhabitants of the state.
Copasa, setup in 1974, is controlled by the Minas Gerais
government and is linked to the State Regional Development
and Urban Policy Office. Today, the company is public and
its shares are traded in the New Market of São Paulo Stock
Exchange (Bovespa), which requires that companies raise the
bar on their corporate governance standards.
Caxias do Sul – Approval of R$ 104 million financing will
allow the implementation of the water supply system
Marrecas, with capacity for 1 thousand liters per second of
drinking water. This will provide water supply to a
population of 245 thousand inhabitants, which will match the
growth estimates of the city up to 2020. The Bank’s support
corresponds to 80% of the project’s total amount, of R$ 130
million.
The new investments, which will increase the drinking water
supply by nearly 60% of the capacity, will eliminate the
estimated deficit by 2010. The works are expected to be
implemented within 36 months.
Cesan - The R$ 85.7 million financing for Espírito Santo
sanitation company will be used in investments for the
expansion and improvement of the water and sewage supply
system in several cities in the state. The company also
expects to make operational and commercial improvements in
its performance, and carry out engineering projects. The
Bank’s support corresponds to 83.1% of total investments, of
R$ 103.2 million.
The expansion of sanitation services will benefit 460
thousand people in four cities (Vitória, Serra, Viana and
Guarapari), generating 1.3 thousand direct and indirect jobs
during the works.
