» BNDES joins the new Green Protocol and reiterates its commitment to environmental preservation


The President of BNDES, Luciano Coutinho, will sign next Friday, on August 01, the new Protocolo Verde (Green Protocol), together with the representatives of federal public banks.

The purpose of the Protocol is to define forerunner, multiplying and exemplar bank policies and practices in terms of social and environmental responsibility and in harmony with the sustainable development. The document is an update of the commitments provided in the Green Protocol signed in 1995. The participating banks recognize that may play an essential role in the guidance of private investments directed to environmental preservation and continuous improvement in the well-being of the society.

The signatories of Protocol undertake to finance the sustainable development, through credit lines and programs that promote the quality of life of the population and environmental protection.

Among the main guidelines of the program are:

1 - Special financing conditions, such as taxes, terms and grace periods differentiated, to the projects considered social and environmental investments. Also, the signatory banks of the Protocol undertake to instruct the credit borrower to adopt sustainable production and consumption practices.

2 - Take into account the social and environmental impacts and costs in the asset management (itself and third-parties) and in the risk analysis of clients and investment projects, based on the National Environment Policy.

3 - Incorporate social and environmental criteria to the credit analysis and granting process to investment projects, taking into consideration the importance of their impacts and risks and the need of mitigating and compensatory measures.

4 - Carry out social and environmental analysis of clients whose activities require environmental license and/or represent significant adverse social impacts;

5 - Promote the sustainable consumption of natural resources and materials derived from them in internal processes.

6 - Inform, sensitize and continuously engage the parties interested in sustainability policies and practices of the institution.

7 - Promote the procedure harmonization, cooperation and integration of efforts among the signatory organizations in the implementation of these Principles, how to adopt governance mechanism, propose improvements in the process and monitor its development.
