» BNDES finances R$ 114.7 million to Lojas Marisa network expansion

· Operation will guarantee the opening of 19 stores, expansion of 30 and repair of 12 units
· Network expansion will generate 2,150 direct jobs and 7,550 indirect jobs

The board of Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimento Econômico e Social [BNDES] approved a financing to Marisa Lojas Varejistas Ltda. enterprise, in the amount of R$ 114.7 million, for the expansion and repair of its store network. The expansion of Marisa store chain started in 2005 and will be implemented by the year of 2007. It is about a direct operation, which will enable the opening of 19 stores, expansion of 30 and repair of 12 units, in the States of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais, Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, Santa Catarina, Distrito Federal, Mato Grosso do Sul, Bahia, Ceará, Pará, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Sergipe, Rio Grande do Norte, Alagoas, Maranhão, Amazonas, Rondônia, Tocantins and Acre. With such project, the enterprise expects to generate 2,150 direct jobs and 7,550 indirect jobs.

The enterprise has the objective of strengthening its presence in places where the enterprise already operates, by investing in a new store concept so-called "Marisa Ampliada" [Enlarged Marisa]. The new proposal has a blend of more complete and differentiated products than that blend already existing in the Marisa network conventional stores.

The repair of points already established and expansion of others, by using the "Marisa Ampliada" new concept, aim at optimizing the use of selling area and modernizing goods exhibition, besides controlling the trademark where the enterprise operates. Another advantage is the increasing in competitiveness as a result of the growth in sales, improvement in the existing logistics, and dilution of fixed costs. All of that restructuration generates trades and jobs more formal than the retail sales as a whole.

The group opened, in 1948, its first store at São Paulo downtown and, in 1950, it was established the first "outlet" ever heard in Brazil: Marisa Malhas. In 1988, the group inaugurated its first shopping store. By the end of 1999, the enterprise started a new business concept, by inaugurating or adapting several stores for the "Marisa Ampliada" standard, which, besides trading female fashion, lingerie and accessories, started including infant and juvenile fashion, male fashion, and articles for bed, table and bath. The objective is to reach not only female clothing, but also the whole family.

Marisa network is comprised of 153 stores and present in 25 states. With its head office in São Paulo, Marisa belongs to Goldfarb group and employs over 7.5 thousand people, especially, young women, most of whom, in their first formal job .
