BNDES finances with R$ 180 million the development of a new car of Fiat
. Bank supports also the social company's project directed to the youth
The project for the development of a new vehicle by Fiat Automóveis S.A., with the enhancement and modernization of the industrial unit of Betim, in the state of Minas Gerais, will receive a financing of R$ 180 million by BNDES. The value corresponds to 40% of the investments that will be executed by the company, R$ 451 million. Part of the financing, R$ 500 thousand, will be directed by the company to a social project that promotes social inclusion of youth living under risk.
The production of the new model, the compact Idea, demands investments for almost all manufacturing phases, but the most significant are those related to stamping, tinsmith and assembling. As to the factory facilities, the project involves layout adaptations of the power and compressed air transformation and distribution stations. In addition, it also includes the implementation of new equipment and reallocation of existent implements. The Brazilian Idea has very similar characteristics to the one made in Italy. However, Fiat applied changes to adequate it to the national market and to the manufacturing processes of other models already produced in Brazil.
In the last years, the segment of compact cars has presented the greatest growth in the Brazilian market, going from a slightly more than 2% of sold cars in 2000, to 9% in 2004. The entry of Fiat in this segment projects an increase of its profitability and the maintain its volume of employments. Furthermore, this shall cause positive impacts to those companies that participate within its supply chain process. According to data from last year, the group Fiat controls on of the greatest industrial conglomerates in Brazil, directly employing around 21 thousand people and generating exports of US$ 900 million.
The social project supported by Fiat, which will receive a financing of BNDES, is the Árvore da Vida [Life's Tree], developed in the neighborhood of Jardim Terezópolis, in the city of Betim, a poor community with nearly 65 thousand habitants. In this area, the project intends to eradicate illiteracy in a period of four years, and provide professional training, aiming at inserting mainly young people in the labor market. The resources for this project will be released in the ambit of the Support Program for Companies' Social Investments
