58 - Restoration of
N. Sra. dos Remédios Main Church of Paraty -
Phase I
Paraty (RJ)
Angra Brazil
Amount of support: R$ 1,4 million.
|
By mid of the 17th century, around a small chapel dedicated to N. Sra. dos Remédios, the village of Paraty was formed. In 1668, the chapel was demolished to give place to a bigger church, which was only completed in 1712. Seventy-five years later that church was already small to shelter all Paraty's believers, and therefore it was substituted by a new, bigger and more sumptuous church, inaugurated in 1873.
In the neoclassic style construction stand out the unfinished towers and the church's back not completed.
The Church was recognized as a National Historical Monument by IPHAN [National Institute of Historical and Artistic Property] in 1962.
Presently, the church's space is used by the community for cultural and social purposes.

The building was interdicted due to its extremely bad state of conservation, with problems of infiltration in the roof, damaged and obsolete building installations and wood structures. The BNDES support refers to emergency works with the purpose of interrupting the process of degradation, restoring and making the monument available to public access.

Fundação Instituto para o Desenvolvimento da Amazônia (Amazon Development Institute)
Amount of support: R$ 1,2 million.

The Saint Ann's Church, designed by Antonio Giuseppe Landi, an Italian architect, was founded in 1782, after 20 years of building. It presents a Greek cross plan, with central dome and pinnacle, with two shorter lateral arms and rectangular main chapel, making it a rare design in Brazil. It has an arched cover and a rich composition in its interior, which highlights the side altarpieces and the main altarpiece and extemporaneous marbled paintings, applied to walls, columns and pillars. The Saint Ann's Church is part of the architectonic collection the architect Antônio Landi, also called arquiteto de Belém (architect of Belém), left in Pará. It was recorded by IPHAN (Institute of National Historical and Artistic Heritage) in 1962. It is located in the historical center of Belém.
