78 – Recovery of Casa do Trem Bélico (House of War Train)
Santos (RJ)
Organização de Desenvolvimento Cultural e Preservação Ambiental–AMA Brasil
Financial support: R$ 1.4 million
|
The Casa do Trem Bélico is the oldest public building in Santos, although the year of its erection is still doubtful. It was probably erected between 1640 and 1656, when the Portuguese independence was restored. The year of 1734 is mentioned in the main entrance to the building, but this can refer an important reform and an expansion of the original building.
The original duty of the property was sheltering the “war train”, or the set of weapons, ammunitions and gunpowder, intended to be used in the fortresses that protected the Port of Santos. The names were widely used throughout the time: Warehouse of War Implements, Royal Train House, Warehouse of War Train, train building or simply the Train House.
It was one of the first properties of the state of São Paulo to be awarded the title of national historical heritage in 1940.
