The building of the old Engineering School was designed by the architect Pedro Pezérat and constructed between 1810-12. The present entranceway and neo-classical gallery is one of the rare examples of preserved 19th century buildings. It was constructed to house the Royal Military Academy, birthplace of Brazilian engineering, becoming the National School of Engineering in 1930. Historically registered 1962, it is today the Institute of Social Sciences and Philosophy of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. |

8 - Restoration of the
Medical College of Terreiro de Jesus

| The old
Medical College was constructed on the old local
of the Jesuit College, which operated from
1552-1759. Beginning in 1795, the school housed
the Military Hospital which then became the
Medical College in 1832. After a fire destroyed
the installations in 1905, the College was
re-inaugurated in 1909, with its present
appearance. The architectural grouping of
buildings, located in the historical center of
Salvador, was historically registered in 1938. |

9 - Restoration of the
N. S. da Lapa dos Mercadores Church

| Constructed
by a brotherhood of prosperous businessmen, it was
inaugurated in 1755. It is one of the few churches
in Rio de Janeiro which does not have a churchyard
and is designed in the form of an ellipse. The
present appearance of the church, with its
neo-classical entrance was the result of a reforms
made in 1870, by the architect Antônio Pádua e
Castro. Historically registered by Iphan in
1938. |

10 - Restoration of the
N. S. do Rosário Church

| The
present church replaced the primitive chapel.
Constructed by the N. S. do Rosário dos Pretos
Brotherhood, in 1785, its design is attributed to
Antônio Ferreira de Sousa Calheiros, with its
entranceway by Miguel Francisco de Araújo. It is
considered an excellent example of the colonial
baroque period of Minas Gerais. It was
historically registered by Iphan in 1939. |

11 - Repair of the Train
House

| The Train
House was the architectural nucleus of what is
today the National Historical Museum. Constructed
in 1762, by Governor and Captain General of Rio de
Janeiro, Gomes Freire de Andrade (Count of
Bobadela), this building was used to store
ammunition and armaments. Its name refers to the
Portuguese "artillery train," which
composed all of the armament that what to be used
to defend a city. Today, the building holds the
coin and metal collection of the museum, the
largest in Latin America. |

12 - S. Antônio Church

| The church dates from the beginning of the 18th century, the gold rush period in S. Bárbara. It was constructed in several different stages, as was the case with most baroque churches in Minas Gerais. The ceiling of the nave has
a painting by Manuel
da Costa Ataíde. It was historically registered by Iphan
in 1938 |
