43 - Emergency Recovery Plan for the Museum of Fine Arts - MNBA
Rio de Janeiro (RJ)
Friends of the National Museum of Fine Arts Association
Support amount: R$ 1 million

The history of the National Museum of Fine Arts has its origin with the arrival to Brazil of the Royal Family and the French Artistic Mission of 1816. Its initial collection rebuilds these historic facts. It was initially established as the Gallery of the Imperial Academy. For more than a century, in the same format of the congenerous institutions in Europe and the United States, the Museum and academy formed a single institution.
Law no. 378, of January 13, 1937, granted autonomy to the old Gallery, transforming it into the National Museum of Fine Arts, which was inaugurated as such on August 19, 1938. The building, registered by the Iphan, was designed by the Spanish architect Adolfo Morales de los Rios and elaborated in the eclectic style, being inaugurated in 1908, as the new main building of the National School of Fine Arts and its Gallery, today's National Museum of Fine Arts.
Its collection represents the most important historic record of Brazilian art and a noteworthy foreign collection, with approximately 15 thousand artifacts - among Brazilian and foreign artists - with highlights among the engravings, with works from the precursor of this art form in Brazil, Carlos Osvald, up to the most contemporary such as Rubem Grilo. The 19th century Brazilian art nucleus, with paintings, sculptures and drawings is the country's most important. Italian baroque works from the 17th century, that were unknown 15 years ago, are the only ones in Latin America and are constantly lent out to exhibits in Europe.
The project's proposal is to promote the recovery of the museological structure that comprises the building, its functions and equipment in a way to guarantee the preservation of the collection of temporary exhibits and people's safety.
