48 - Restoration of the Bom Jesus da Coluna Church.
Rio de Janeiro (RJ)
Brazilian Army Cultural Foundation
Value of support: R$ 1.3 million.
|
The Bom Jesus da Coluna Church was built in the beginning of the 17th century on Bom Jesus Island (currently Fundão Island). This Island, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, was donated to the Order of Franciscan Fathers in 1704, with the construction of the Church and convent starting in 1705. It was registered by Iphan in 1964 for its significant representation of the architecture, sacred art and building techniques that were practiced in Colonial Brazil. The convent collapsed due to lack of conservation, and only the Church remains today, that maintains the primitive characteristics of the Franciscans' works: galilé (a gallery located in the edge of the porch), a single nave and a deep main chapel.

49 - Restoration of the Matriz de N. Sra. da Conceição de Angra dos Reis Church.
Angra dos Reis (RJ)
Angra Brazil
Value of assistance: R$ 1,6 million.
|
The city of Angra dos Reis, located in the southeast region of the State of Rio de Janeiro and known as the Green Coast, is one of the oldest in Brazil, with the municipal district's lands having been discovered by the Portuguese in 1502. The presence of the Portuguese colonies in addition to the constant economic development resulted in a daring architecture for the period, with the striking influence of the Catholic Church, still present in several buildings in the region, as is the case with the Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição de Angra dos Reis Church. The building's main facade has a door and two windows at the height of the choir. The main altar presents elements that are characteristic of the rococo mixed with neoclassic elements. The Church, registered by the Iphan in 1954, holds some treasures, such as the Lioz marble baptism basin that was donated by King D. João V.

50 - Restoration of the Roof of the Rio de Janeiro's Municipal Theater
Rio de Janeiro (RJ)
Associação dos Amigos do Teatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro [Association of the Friends of Rio de Janeiro's Municipal Theater]
Value of assistance: R$ 838.5 thousand.
|
The Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro, built between the years 1904 and 1909, is a miniature of the Paris Opera, capable of holding 2400 people. It possesses eclectic nuances, as did other constructions from the same period, with great columns comprising the colonnade of the three façades that surround the small towers. The building uses marble, bronze, golden metals and Paris plaster, besides specially designed wall tiles and glazed tiles. The architecture composition of the bronze roof includes domes, mansards, skylights and other art work, such as the mortar sculptures of Rodolfo Bernardelli and the eagle above the main dome, made in a French foundry. It was established as historical patrimony by Iphan [Historic and Artistic National Patrimony Institute] in 1973.

51 - Restoration of the Nossa Senhora da Candelária Church
Rio de Janeiro (RJ)
Irmandade do Santíssimo Sacramento da Candelária [Candelária Sisterhood of the Holy Sacrament]
Value of assistance: R$ 2.5 million.
|
The Nossa Senhora da Candelária Church, built between the years 1775 and 1898 in rock masonry with foundations supported by wooden poles upon earthwork, is formed by three naves, a dome in the transept and a broad main chapel. The main façade - entirely made out of granite extracted from a stone-mine located in today's Catete district - has great spaces covered with stonecutting art, besides the doors, windows, pillars and entablatures being highlighted by perceptible moldings and frames. The crowning part of the two bell towers is coated by tiles and eight white marble sculptures - sculpted in Lisbon - surrounding the external dome's base of the Church, established as historical patrimony by Iphan in 1938.
