BNDES and Eneva Group deliver oxygen plant to the largest public hospital in Roraima

Mar 22, 2021

The president of the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES), Gustavo Montezano, the governor of Roraima, Antonio Denarium, and the director of external relationsExternal Relations of Eneva, Pedro Zinner, made the official delivery of an oxygen plant to the General Hospital of Roraima (HGR) on Monday (22nd), the largest public health unit in the state capital, Boa Vista. Donated through the Matchfunding Saving Lives program, with resources from BNDES and Eneva, the equipment is the first of its kind in a hospital in the state. The plant will be able to supply up to 30 ICU beds for Covid-19, with a production capacity of 30 cubic meters per hour. The total donation of R$ 1.6 million also includes oxygen cylinders, 30 of which have already been delivered.

In addition to serving the HGR, the plant will be able to supply oxygen to other hospitals in the state network. The operation will also allow the release of cylinders to other health units in the municipalities surrounding Boa Vista. According to the epidemiological bulletin of the State Department of Health of Roraima, 71% if the hospital’s ICU beds dedicated to Covid-19 are occupied (data from March 18). "18th). “Development is always done in partnership. A private company, a public bank and a government committed change people’s lives,” Montezano said.

The joint work as a way to combat the pandemic was also highlighted by Governor Antonio Denarium: “Each cent from Eneva was followed by another from BNDES to bring this oxygen plant. Together, that’s how we’re going to overcome Covid-19,” he said.

By 2020, Eneva had already donated R$ 400,000 to BNDES Matchfunding Saving Lives. The company’s director of external relations stressed that the state welcomed the company with great affection. Eneva is building, in Boa Vista, the Jaguatirica II Thermal Power Plant, which will generate 117 MW of electricity from natural gas from the Azulão field in Amazonas. The power generated will serve about 70% of the consumption of the entire state, replacing the current diesel source, with consequent reduction of emissions and generation costs.

Record – The Saving Lives program was launched in April 2020, in a partnership between BNDES, Sitawi Finanças do Bem, the Confederation of Holy Houses of Mercy (CMB) and Bionexo. The program became Brazil’s largest matchfunding, raising, until February 2021, R$ 81.3 million in donations through the crowdfunding platform in the Benfeitoria website. This was made possible thanks to more than 1,700 donors, including private individuals, companies and BNDES. More than 600 philanthropic institutions and public hospitals that serve Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) were benefited, with 44 million EPIs in more than 460 municipalities in all regions of the country.

Second phase – BNDES decided to start a second phase of the Saving Lives program to support the emergency demands of hospitals in the country, such as acquisitions of EPIs and oxygen – cylinders and plants. This time, however, only donations from legal entities of at least R$ 100,000 are accepted. BNDES will continue to double the amount given with resources of its own.

Interested parties should contact Sitawi (salvandovidas@sitawi.net) to sign the contract and make the deposit. BNDES adds the same value of the donation and Bionexo’s electronic platform makes the purchases, thus ensuring transparency and efficiency.

The choice of institutions that will receive the program’s support is decided in conjunction with CMB, taking into account the critical situation of hospitals regarding the relative number of deaths by Covid-19 in a given municipality and the bed occupancy rate. The donor, in turn, can follow the ranking defined by BNDES or direct their donation to hospitals that are on the list of Saving Lives. Always with the purpose of making all operations transparent, the program has the independent review of E&Y Brasil, which is not charging fees for this service and has already published two reports available on the program’s page.
