BNDES - Brazilian Development Bank

BNDES’ disbursements reached R$ 54.8 billion by May

Jun 19, 2015

• Exclusively for micro, small and medium-sized companies, the BNDES Card lent 15% more than in the first five months in 2014

Disbursements from the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) reached R$ 54.8 billion between January and May of this year, representing a 20% drop against the same period in 2014. The infrastructure sector, with R$ 20.4 billion, accounted for 37.2% of the total, followed by industry, with R$ 16.3 billion, some 30% of the total.

The main highlight in infrastructure was the significant growth in releases to the electric energy segment, which increased 70%, to R$ 8 billion within the first five months of the year. Disbursements increased to 74% for the item “other transport”, which comprises investments in urban mobility, reaching R$ 3.4 billion. Such projects, due to their structuring feature, have been more prominent in infrastructure investments the Bank has supported.

The BNDES disbursed R$ 16 billion to micro, small and medium-sized companies up to May 2015, accounting for 29.2% of total releases. The result was leveraged by the BNDES Card, through which releases totaled R$ 4.8 billion, up 14.9% against the same period in 2014. Some 293,000 operations were carried out through the BNDES Card this year, an increase of 6.4%.

Changes to the BNDES’ Investment Maintenance Program (BNDES PSI) – currently with higher, although still competitive interest rates – also had an impact on the Bank’s results. PSI’s disbursements reached R$ 16.3 billion until last May, recording a 43% drop when compared to January-May 2014.

Consultations totaling R$ 53.5 billion, as well as approvals of R$ 34.7 billion, both registered a decline in the first five months of the year (39% and 47%, respectively).
